Have you ever been in a place where life is completely different than what you imagined it would be like? I have, a lot. It can feel like hurtling down the road playing chicken with disaster with no out in sight. It feels like being crushed. The knee-jerk reaction may be to look back at what you could have changed to prevent this head-on collision.
The what ifs will drive you crazy. If you would have studied harder, maybe you would have gone to graduate school. If you wouldn’t have met that one person, you wouldn’t have to deal with all the muck they left. If you would have made a different investment, your finances would be in order. Not only are you faced with future potential disaster, you are being chased by your memories. The truth is, we can’t fix the past, and it is a waste of time to dwell there without learning from it.
The only thing we can change about our past is our perception of it.
We not only have to trust God with our unknown future but also with the events of our past. When we give each and every painful memory and all our fears and dreams of the future to Him, how wonderful is the freedom.
Reminders to Trust:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB)
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Psalm 9:10 (NASB)
Be still, and know that I am God (KJV)
Cease striving and know that I am God (NASB)
Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God (MSG)
The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overpower it.
John 1:5 (NASB)
